Who supplies your water

Most shore houses on the barrier islands from Brigantine to Cape May get public water from a utility, such as the Atlantic City Municipal Utilities Authority in Atlantic City or New Jersey American Water in Ocean City, while some mainland and Cape May County homes use private wells; your water bill names your supplier.

How do you find out who supplies your house?

Your water bill names the supplier. If the house is new to you, the town's water or utilities office can say, and the meter pit lid often carries the utility's name.

What does the yearly water report tell you?

Community water systems publish a Consumer Confidence Report each year listing where the water comes from and what was measured in it. Look for hardness, sodium, the disinfectant used and any lead and copper sampling. EPA explains the reports on its CCR page.

Where does island water come from?

Sources differ by supplier. New Jersey American Water's report for Ocean City describes groundwater wells; other suppliers use their own mix of sources. Read your own supplier's report rather than relying on a neighboring town's.

When is a private well your responsibility?

If the house has its own well, everything from the well to the tap is yours: testing, treatment and repairs. Landlords renting a house on a private well must test it every five years under the Private Well Testing Act. See RF-5 and AS-5.

Walk-through checklist:

  1. Find the supplier on the bill.
  2. Download the latest yearly report.
  3. Note hardness and disinfectant. They decide whether a softener or carbon filter is worth considering.
  4. Keep it with the house manual for renters and for the plumber.
