Close the outdoor shower and hose faucets

To winterize an outdoor shower, close the indoor shutoff that feeds it, open the shower valves so the pipe drains, open any low-point drain cap, take the head off if it traps water, and disconnect every hose from frost-free faucets so they can empty.

Bring

  • The key or handle for the shower's indoor shutoff
  • A bucket and a towel

The procedure

  1. Close the indoor shutoffs. Turn off the valves inside the house that feed the outdoor shower and any hose faucets.
  2. Open the outdoor valves. Open hot and cold at the shower and leave them open, so the trapped water drains out.
  3. Open the low drain. If the shower pipe has a drain cap or bleeder at the bottom, open it and catch the water.
  4. Hoses off. Disconnect every hose. A frost-free faucet only drains if nothing is attached to hold water in it.
  5. Leave it open and noted. Write "outdoor shower drained, valves open" in the closing notes.
  6. Plumber's step: if the shower has no indoor shutoff, ask the plumber to add one; until then it gets blown out at the closing visit.

Why does a hose ruin a frost-free faucet?

The valve in a frost-free faucet sits inside the warm house and the long stem drains toward the outside. A hose left on holds water in the stem, which then freezes and splits it, often inside the wall where nobody sees the leak until spring.

Should the outdoor shower be wrapped or covered?

Wrapping the valves can help against wind, but never cover or block the flood openings in the foundation below an elevated house. FEMA requires those openings to let floodwater in and out.

Questions owners ask

Can I leave the outdoor shower on if the house is heated?
No. The shower pipe runs outside the heated space, so drain it anyway.
What if water keeps dripping from the open shower valve?
The indoor shutoff isn't closing fully. Have it replaced.
Do frost-free faucets need draining?
They drain themselves only with the hose off and the pipe sloping outward.
