Hiring a licensed plumber

To hire a plumber for a New Jersey shore house, look the person up on the state's licence verification site for a current master plumber licence, ask whether the job needs a permit from the town's construction office, and get the scope, price and closing or opening notes in writing.

How do you check a New Jersey plumbing licence?

Plumbing contractors in New Jersey are licensed by the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers, part of the Division of Consumer Affairs. Search the name or licence number on the state's licence verification site. Licences are renewed every two years, so check the status, not just that a number exists.

Which plumbing jobs need a permit?

Work on the water and drain system is governed by New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code. Its plumbing subcode is the National Standard Plumbing Code, New Jersey edition; the state's list of adopted codes shows the 2024 edition, adopted August 17, 2026. Replacing a water heater, adding a fixture or fitting a backwater valve generally goes through the local construction office. Ask the office; rules on minor work differ.

What should a seasonal-house plumbing agreement cover?

Walk-through checklist:

  1. The licence number on the quote.
  2. What is included: drain-down, air blowout, antifreeze in traps, water heater, outdoor shower, softener or filter.
  3. Written notes at closing and the reopening date.
  4. Permits pulled by the plumber where needed.
  5. Emergency plan: who comes if the freeze alarm goes off.

What does a local service company's page look like?

Most plumbing companies list their services by job type. Central Plumbing & HVAC's plumbing service page (Central Plumbing & HVAC shares owners with this manual) is one example of how a company sets out what it does; it serves Bucks and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania, not the Jersey shore.
